The Story behind Liberty Poppers
The story of Liberty Poppers began in the early days of 2020, in the suburb of Kosovo, Lungujja, Kampala, where a passion for Popping began bringing young dancers together.
The movement was initiated by Tamale Richard, popularly known as Smiles Popper, who envisioned creating a space where young people could discover, learn, and express themselves through the art of Popping. What started as a passion for the dance gradually grew into a community built around creativity, friendship, discipline, and a shared love for Hip-Hop culture.
From the streets and training spaces of Kosovo, the vision was to give dancers an opportunity to develop their skills while understanding and respecting the roots of Popping. Liberty Poppers became a platform where emerging dancers could train together, exchange knowledge, showcase their abilities, and inspire one another.
Over time, the initiative has continued to grow beyond its beginnings, carrying the spirit of its founders and dancers into new spaces and opportunities. Its journey remains rooted in the belief that Popping can empower individuals, unite communities, and preserve an important part of Hip-Hop culture.
Today, Liberty Poppers continues to build on that original vision—developing dancers, creating opportunities, strengthening the community, and inspiring future generations to keep the movement alive.
